There are several factors to consider when you are thinking of decorating your home with fireplace mantels. Fireplace mantels can make or break the beauty of your home, so be wise in choosing the right design, styles etc.
First, think of the look that you want your home to portray. If you want an old or rustic feel, go for brick fireplace mantels.
These are as traditional as a fireplace mantel can get. If you prefer something more classic instead, a marble one will suit you fine. The other type is a wooden one, which are available in maple, cherry, pine or oak. If your budget isn't very much, then fireplace mantels made of plastic and concrete will serve its purpose just as well too. If decorated well, it will look just as good and pretty, if not better. While these are the most common ones, there are also 'special' ones made in country, hip and contemporary themes.
Now that you have fireplace mantels, what do you want to put on it?
Here are several suggestions that you could use to either revamp the entire decor or to merge, blend and mix with whatever you currently have.
Friends and Family
Celebrate those who are closest to us. Display photographs of them and other memorabilia on your fireplace mantels. You can group them according to occasion or cliques. Display anything from graduation photos, wedding photos, new births, anniversary pictures or just anything at all that brings back memories and a smile to your face. Get frames that match the colour and the theme of your fireplace mantel. If not sure, classic blacks or whites will do just fine.
Holiday Seasons
Whatever the holiday, festival or celebration is, use your fireplace mantel as the place to spread the joy and the festivities. It may be Halloween, Christmas or Hanukkah. Use candles or any other Christmas stuff like snowmen or snowflakes for Christmas. A menorah and stars would be good for Hanukkah while pumpkins would surely do the trick for Halloween.
Birthdays
It would be an honour to have fireplace mantels decorated to celebrate the birthday of each family member. If mum is celebrating a birthday this month, have photographs of her displayed, along with any of her favourite items. The decoration could be kept there until the next birthday celebration comes along and just change it according to whoever who is celebrating.
As decorations aren't permanent, there is no harm trying and mixing and matching. If they don't look good, simply take them off and put up something again!
